Research
Art and design is not created in a vacuum. All art and design is a by product of culture, Communication Design is no different and is informed by ideas of public taste (aesthetics), technological shifts (innovation), and function (needs of a community). Design is also the product of the values of a particular time (era) and place (location/region). Context is everything. Without it, design is merely an object without a back story, an artifact without meaning or purpose.
Research, outline, write, design, and produce a piece of design using print, motion, and/or interaction/experience to educate the class about a designer of choice. Along with a research paper, Development of a physical design solution to present your research. The visual solution* will, in all ways, reflect the values and philosophy of the designer and what contextualizing factors informed their work, and make it relevant for us today. This piece will be in the format that best reflects the designer and your insight into who they are, how they work, and what they bring to the work they create(ed). David Carson had a non traditional and nonlinear journey as a designer. Not starting his career in design till later in life, he integrated his past experiences and brought those into his career and process as a creative.
This project stressed the importance of research and logic behind design.
