In creating a link between the present and the future, science fiction invites us to consider the complex ways our choices and interactions contribute to generating the future. In this project we explored the genre of science fiction and how designers, artists and writers have used it to look ahead and speculate on a not so certain future.

We were asked to envision how communication will evolve and look like in the year 2074, how it looks, feels, and sounds. Emotions and personalities are essential to perceiving a conversation, so what if we could sense and navigate how to start a conversation with someone before you even say hello? This speculative glyph system imagines physical auras that can be seen by others, thus communicating how a person is feeling.

It all started on January 20, 2070

Because of the thinning ozone layer over time, a solar flair caused a massive amount of electromagnetic energy to be released into Earth’s atmosphere. Effectively giving all living species the ability to see auras that show people’s personalities and emotional states.

The Rorschach test was our inspiration for our “auras”. The system uses specific identifiers with color and motion to signify personality and emotion. A series of “auras” were created useing India Ink and the traditional method of creating symetrical icons, this was a process of letting art be and losing a sense of control.
